Programma, info e contatti | Summary In the 40 hectares of land context of the Koinonia living and welcoming Community in Zambia, 16 days of theoretical and practical activities will take place for the introduction to Permaculture, with in-depth modules on: Regenerative Agriculture, Water Management and Agroforestry. In addition to international students, members of the Community who take care of the farm and Zambian students will take part in the course. A unique experience of life and work within an African Community founded in 1982 and which has always been committed to offering social opportunities, training and formation to young Africans. Building soil, community & resilience The term “Permaculture” refers to a design system that aims to the harmonious and regenerative reintegration of human activities in the landscape by imitating the synergies and beneficial relationships of natural ecosystems. Its primary purpose is to benefit life in all its forms. The practices of Permaculture were founded on the ethical bases of Earth Care, Personal Care, Equal Sharing, and using principles from the observation of natural systems. Permaculture can be applied in every field of design: from large plots of land to balconies in the city, from mini farms to urban centers, from vegetable gardens and gardens to social groups such as associations, organizations and social networks. The same principles underlying ecosystems are used to redesign any aspect of one's life and activities. What is a PDC? The Permaculture Design Course is a certified 72-hour training experience. The course introduces the core of Permaculture Design as set by Bill Mollison, co-founder of the movement, and author of Permaculture. A designer’s manual. The aim of the course is to provide interdisciplinary and holistic tools for designing for human settlements such as: agriculture, water harvesting and management, energy, natural building methods, agroforestry systems, waste management, animal systems, appropriate technologies, economic management and community development. Participants who will have followed the entire course will receive an internationally recognized Permaculture Design Certificate, which gives access to the Permaculture Diploma Process. PDC OFFERED BY REGEN HABITAT & GIUSEPPE SANNICANDRO REGEN HABITAT is a not-for-profit Association dealing with human settlements designed in harmony with the environment. It believes that the planet needs a new agri-food culture that recovers the best of traditional techniques, integrating new knowledge from agroecology, permaculture design, regenerative agriculture and all the sciences applied to land management. Regen spreads the principles of regenerative agriculture and agroforestry while supporting the ecological culture of reuse, recycling and self-production, creating solidarity networks of ecological economics and taking care of education and training in nature for groups of all ages. GIUSEPPE SANNICANDRO: I was born in Puglia, a land that, with its nature, its traditions and its flavors, has always welcomed my interest in nature and life in the open air. Passionate about Regenerative Agriculture, Earth Movements, Water Management, Keyline Design, Soil Fertility, Horticulture and Agro-Forest Systems, I studied and graduated in Permaculture Design in Tenerife. After years of study and practice, I now design and teach Permaculture in Italy and in Europe. I am co-founder of the Regen association and a member of the Italian Permaculture Academy, for which I also carry out tutoring for the Diploma. I organize and teach courses and workshops, including certified 72-hour Permaculture Design Courses (PDC). For years I have been passionately planning and offering consultancy to multifunctional farms, self- sufficiency projects and ecological communities and I am involved in urban permaculture projects. I believe that the future of the planet is entrusted to us and to our care and I am committed to spreading the culture of regeneration of natural environments: we can naturally improve the fertility of the land and, at the same time, regenerate living, abundant ecosystems similar to natural ones, and also productive of both food and other resources. IN COLLABORATION WITH XFARM Agricoltura Prossima: is a project of the Social Enterprise Qualcosa di Diverso born in San Vito dei Normanni within the experience of the Urban Lab ExFadda. In the heart of Puglia, we are transforming 50 hectares of land confiscated from organized crime into an agricultural, ecological and social company capable of generating work, well-being for the community and improving the ecosystem. We regenerate the soil, nourish plants correctly, promote circular economy, increase biodiversity, offer quality agricultural products, encourage socio-work placements, manage a social garden, organize community events, support technical training and scientific research, accompany agricultural projects promoted by young people from our area. As a numerous community, we are building an original rural HUB that wants to contribute to the local development of the Alto Salento. My name is Jacopo Volpicelli, I was born in the outskirt of Turin, grown-up between the countryside and the city, I’ve spent several years in different countries, I've always admired the natural world. After moving to the Netherlands and being a graduate of a multidisciplinary course called Global Sustainability Sciences, my interest in finding solutions to global challenges has brought me to deepen my knowledge of Permaculture. After a trip to Brazil, researching syntropic agroforestry systems for my thesis, I came back to Europe and participate in my first PDC in Andalusia, Spain. From there it has begun a long learning journey that led me to XFarm with which I have been working for more than a year, now. THE PLACE: KOINONIA COMMUNITY ZAMBIA Born in 1982, Koinonia Community is a Charitable Trust registered in Zambia. It was started by some young people gathered around Fr. Renato Kizito Sesana, and is part of a network of Koinonia Communities in Kenya and Sudan. A secular organization that promotes integral human development and community life; with a holistic approach it promotes a culture of peace and solidarity and it responds to the needs of children and youths in difficult situations, assisting them to grow into responsible and reliable citizens. Koinonia is determined to ensure that all established initiatives become self-sufficient. This involves strengthening our educational activities and social entrepreneurial skills, with the support and skills of our network of friends. The Initiatives in Zambia: Mthunzi Centre NGO, started by Koinonia in the year 2000, is a residence and home for about 50 former street children and youths. Here they are given guidance from loving and professionally trained adults, and provided with meals, counselling, school and medical care. Those who have completed the primary cycle (grade 7) attend the nearby St. Columba’s Secondary School, managed by the Teresian Sisters, a local religious congregation. The activities of Mthunzi are mainly supported by Amani and Celim, Italian NGOs, while St. Columba's Secondary School is an initiative of ZamScotEd, a Scottish Charity. Most staff members of the Centre are former street children who grew up in the project, having therefore a unique, inside understanding of the challenges in the life of children under their care. Outreach activities: Lonjedzani, Home Based Program and Street Work are projects focusing on improving the life of the girl-child, street children and families in the outskirts and poor suburbs of Lusaka. About 60 children are assisted in their educational, medical and basic needs while stay with their family. Sponsorship Program: after leaving Mthunzi and Lonjedzani, boys and girls are assisted to join vocational courses, while the most academically gifted are encouraged and assisted to pursue studies at college and university level. Lubuto Mthunzi (American Youth) Library: a modern structure in traditional Zambian style with an open arena which can accommodate up to 300 people. A splendid collection of books for children and youth, reading workshops, story-telling session, ecology, theatre, traditional dances, art groups and literacy courses for adults are offered to serve all the area. Computers loaded with special software for children complete the library. Farm and School of Agriculture, Laudato Si, developed aiming to long-term sustainability of the social projects and following the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture. Nowadays a system of garden, orchard, poultry, piggery, 3 fishponds, 1 green house and a full equipped infrastructure for the school (with rooms, kitchen, toilettes, shower and classrooms), offers the opportunity to develop and holistic system: food self-support, product sales and active training “learning by doing” for youth. COSTS & CONTRIBUTIONS: PDC € 450 per participant FOOD and ACCOMMODATION: € 250 per participant: o Overnight stay in the Community Guest House, fully equipped with hostel-style beds, hot water showers and kitchen; o Meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) will be self-managed by the participants with a common fund of € 10 per day (already included in the € 250).
